Today I am grateful for bird baths. I’ve been pretty grounded the last few days so I’m noticing everything. Today I really noticed the bird bath on the berm.

Also, I swear I watched an ant for fifteen minutes as it crawled up my patio wall. Yeah, I know, get a life! I almost wrote about how fascinating it was, but decided it conflicted with my desire to destroy all ants who had invaded my kitchen a while ago. I let all things live. . .in their space. . .not mine. So the ant-on-a-mission is probably in Cleveland by now.

Sitting on the patio, on a gorgeous day, with my book, water, phone and crossword puzzle, I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Nap, read a page. Nap some more, read a page. Nap, read the same pages I just read. Nap, read all pages I thought I just read. Nap. Nap. Nap. Nap. Screw the book.
Then the frenzy of birds woke me up. We had to get a new birdbath this year and I just love it. It has a scalloped edge and it’s darker and tucks into the berm perfectly. You hardly know it’s there. I’ve watched an occasional robin stop by for a drink and a quick rinse off. Little finches and wrens take a sip now and then. But today it was like watching the orgies at the Roman Baths! Almost. Without the sex. I think. I’m not sure. At one point there were three birds at the same time all splashing and carrying on, water flying everywhere. Others squawked from the trees, wearing flip-flops, with little towels around their necks, like swimmers at the Y, waiting for their turn. One batch left and another dove in. Again and again. For an hour. I just watched. It was better than anything on TV. Trust me. . .Anything. I think I must have 20 of the cleanest birds in Pennsylvania. They all must have had dates last night. There will probably be a burst of births like humans nine-months after a blizzard.
I don’t know who put the word out, or why, but I sure am grateful to have a new bird bath for the “kids”. I gotta get outta this house soon. . .before I’m up there with them!
