Guide To Minimalism In The Home

Consumerism can cripple your happiness. Don't let things and the pursuit of stuff drain your happiness. Minimalism is a great way to be happy without stuff.

Over the past 3 years I have become less and less concerned with the accumulation of stuff, and more obsessed with the accumulation of life experiences. My focus today is minimalism of your house. In the past 15 years I have had my couches puked on, pooped on, peed on, various foods and beverages have spilled on them and a host of other horrid incidents that occur to families that have pets and children. I came to the realization that stuff sucks. The more you have the more it draws from you. Whether it's via financial payments or mental wariness. The more stuff you have the more payments you make.

For the last 2 years I have made it a habit to eliminate all unnecessary items, trinkets, furniture and any and all other things that are clutter. We are at the bare minimum for furniture and stuff in the house. No fancy furniture or loads of trinkets. The kitchen has only our most used and necessary items, I keep the counters, free and open. Our walls are sparse, we have some family photos here and there as well as a few large framed pictures. Everything in the home serves the function of making life easier. There's less to clean, which frees up more time. And after all, more time to do things that I enjoy is the ultimate goal.

I began the experiment of minimalism by going from room to room in my house, every Saturday for a month, throwing away or donating everything I haven't used in the past 6 months. After one month I was over 100 bags of stuff lighter in my home. It's amazing home much stuff you accumulate over the years. I have decorated the house with plant life. I enjoy decoration that is alive. Plants are awesome to have in the home. The plants need minimal attention and give much more than they take.
