Music programs cut from budgets-Rock for Musicopia
We all know music programs are being cut from our schools, or at least reduced. How can we help our kids get music experiences? Here is how one SAHS student is helping.
It saddens me as music programs are cut or reduced from our public schools. In my own Souderton Area School District, music programs have been reduced. Some may say it was a major cut, but I think not. Strings are no longer available in 3rd grade. (It's possible there have been other cuts of which I am not aware.)
But, there are school districts with little or no music programs. Research has already shown how students benefit from music peformance in many ways..academically, emotionally, mentally.
My son, Spenser, is a senior at SAHS. He is a drum performer. He is a drum teacher. He is a music mentor. And, this all started back in 4th grade. While at EMC Elementary School he learned the drums from Mr. Helmer. Without that start, and the continued music programs at Indian Valley Middle School, under Ms. Russo and Indian Crest Junior HS (now middle school), under Mr Haggerty, Spenser would not be where he is today in the SAHS music program. He is currently working with Mr. Straka and Mr. Tucker at the high school.

As a senior, Spenser is required to complete a senior project. Since music is a major part of Spenser's life, the first thing he thought of was providing a way to raise money for kids to get music lessons for free. I can't tell you how proud I was when he told me what he was aiming for.
And that is what Spenser is doing today. He is holding a benefit concert to raise money so kids can get music lessons for free.

His benefit concert, Rock for Musicopia, will feature 4 local teen bands.
On Saturday October 20th, the concert will be held at the Fort Washington School of Rock, 425A Delaware Ave, Fort Washington, PA.
The concert will start at 7pm. Tickets are $5 at the door.
All proceeds will go to Musicopia, a local non-profit organization that brings educational music enrichment programs to schools and communities throughout the Delaware Valley.
