The American Dream: Homeownership

On July 4th, we celebrate many things such as the Independence we have as Americans and the American Dream, part of which is home ownership!

With the upcoming July 4th holiday, we take time to celebrate many things.  The Independence we have as Americans. The freedom we have to live in a free country, just as our children and their children will be able to.  We celebrate being Americans, and we celebrate the American Dream.

Part of what we know as "The American Dream" is homeownership.  As humans, we aspire to own our own place: to have someplace that we call home to root ourselves, express ourselves, and make our own.

Coldwell Banker Corporate decided to look into the idea of homeownership, and the importance it has to Americans.  Did the recent recession have any impact on American's valuing home ownership?  The findings from their survey show promising results:

  • 91% of Americans agreed that owning a home is part of the American Dream
  • 84% of US adults agree more people took owning a home for granted before the recession, and nearly three-quarters said they feel like Americans have a greater respect for it now than they did before the recession
  • 83% of renters said that they want to own a home someday
  • Despite the economic challenges so many have faced, 94 percent of homeowners agreed that they are glad they own a home.
  • 95% of parents agreed that it is important for their children to own a home someday
  • 78% of homeowners said that owning a home is one of their greatest achievements

Coldwell Banker also partnered with well-known psychotherapist Dr. Robi Ludwig to examine why, as Americans, we place such a high value on homeownership.

According to Dr. Ludwig, "Renting offers many people a suitable temporary solution, but in the long run, owning a home appeals to our innate desire for having things we can call our own, while providing a connection to the community around us. Homeownership is a commitment; it's about being rooted, which is one of our human instincts."

Additionally, Dr. Ludwig goes on to explain that "Homeownership provides a stable environment that is not dictated by the whims and rules of a landlord. We and our children flourish in secure environments.  The feeling you get when you step through your front door or pull into your driveway is indescribable and priceless and the same holds true for our children who crave stability."

The true value of owning a home goes beyond the finances: it's more than the equity that you are building. It's about taking part in the American Dream: owning a place that you can call your home.  A place to live in, to grow in, to raise a family and build a history in.  A place to celebrate our freedom. A place to realize your American Dream.
