Start gathering up your unwanted electronics because Lansdale Public Library’s 3rd Annual Clean and Green Extravaganza is coming to help you do your part for the environment. From 9am to 1pm on Saturday, July 20, 2013, collection sites will be set up at the Lansdale Library and Lansdale Farmers Market for computers, electronics, shredding, prescription drugs, batteries, sneakers, and unusable clothing and linens. We’ll also be shredding, holding a car wash, selling baked goods, used books and more! Complete details about the Extravaganza are available on the library’s website http://www.lansdalelibrary.org/. Or, you can call 215-362-2666 for more information.
One reason we are collecting electronics for recycling is because of the new law that came into effect this year. The Covered Device Recycling Act was passed in November of 2010 but it wasn’t until January 24, 2013, that the Disposal Ban which affects us as consumers the most went into effect. The Disposal Ban states that “landfills and other solid waste disposal facilities in Pennsylvania will no longer be allowed to accept covered devices or their components.” This ban applies “to desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors, computer peripherals and televisions. However, DEP [Department of Environmental Protection] urges you to do your part for the environment by recycling or reusing as many of your electronic devices as possible in order to limit the number of those items and their hazardous components from entering the environment through landfills and other disposal activities.” More information about the Covered Device Recycling Act is available from the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection website http://www.depweb.state.pa.us/.
