Collett Introduces Gun Control Bill For Local Govs In PA Senate

The bill would allow local governments to enact ordinances to restrict firearms at facilities they own.

NORTH WALES, PA — A local legislator has introduced a new gun control bill in Pennsylvania.

Newly elected State Sen. Marie Collett's (D-12) legislation would give local governments the option enact ordinances to restrict both the "presence and use" of firearms at facilities they own.

“In light of these recent tragedies and amidst a groundswell of public support, it is clearly time to update our laws to bolster local elected officials’ ability to keep their constituents safe,” said Sen. Collett. "Local officials in my district have spoken, and I am listening. Everyone in our communities should be able to play at a park, visit a library, or have their voice heard at a meeting of their local government without the fear of becoming a victim of gun violence."

This would apply to facilities like municipal halls, parks, libraries, and other properties owned or operated by the local government in question. The law would not mandate such an ordinance be put in place.

In announcing the legislation, Collett noted the 2013 shooting at a Ross Township Board of Supervisors meeting as an impetus for the bill. That incident left three dead and several hurt.
