HATFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA — A local man was high on marijuana during a fatal crash that killed an elderly couple in Montgomery County earlier this year, the district attorney's office said Thursday, as they announced charges of homicide by vehicle.

Michael Lennon, 21, of Harleysville, was also charged with DUI and reckless endangerment.

The incident occurred back on June 8 at around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Bergey Road and Bethlehem Pike.

Lennon was headed south on Bethlehem Pike in the right turn only lane in his 2011 Ford Escape, police said. Jamie Burgos, 87, and Eva Burgos, 80, both of Hatfield Township, were in a 2021 Toyota Camry headed northbound, along with a driver and a third passenger.

Lennon attempted to make a right hand turn but was going too fast, and he lost control, passed through the intersection and over the island, and struck the Camry head on, police said.

Jamie and Eva Burgos were transported by EMS to Grand View Hospital where they died a short time later.

Lennon told responding police that he “had marijuana and a bong” inside his vehicle, and he was drug tested as Grand View Hospital after the crash. The toxicology report was positive for marijuana.

Lennon was arraigned on Tuesday, Dec. 17 and booked at Montgomery County Correctional Facility on $200,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 20.
