Endangered Bird Spotted At Montgomery County Preserve

The rare and endangered sedge wren was spotted at a preserve in Montgomery County recently, an environmental group has announced.

NORTH WALES, PA — The rare and endangered sedge wren was spotted at a preserve in Montgomery County recently, an environmental group has announced.

The bird was spotted by visitors in Gwynedd Preserve, 279 acres of former farmland which is owned and protected by the Natural Lands Trust in North Wales.

Though it flourishes elsewhere, the sedge wren is considered endangered in Pennsylvania and protected under the Game and Wildlife Code. It also is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Migratory Bird of Conservation Concern in the Northeast, according to the PA Game Commission.

The sedge wren is especially rare in Eastern Pennsylvania. Habitat loss has contributed significantly to their decline in the area, according to the Natural Lands Trust.

The bird was spotted on the Purple Loop Trail at Gwynedd, a popular hiking trail in the preserve.
