Today I am grateful for eyeballs. There is nothing like having a conversation while looking into someone’s eyeballs. But with today’s eyeballs constantly glued to technology, those moments happen less often than I’m comfortable with. Except for yesterday.
Yesterday I got eyeball to eyeball with a new batch of little swimmer wanabees. “Look at me, please,” I said, over and over as their little faces rotated like bobble heads. “At me. You need to hear this.” Then they connected, tried to look away but I drew them back. “Look into my eyeballs. You must know that I will NEVER let you go in the pool. I am here for you. Look at me. I want you to see that I mean it.” Gottcha, you little guppies. That’s life in the real fast lane and I swear I don’t need batteries or a car.

Then lunch with a friend whose eyeballs defy even mine to look away. We nearly go off the road when we talk in a car because eyeball connection is vital to our lengthy conversations. Love it.

Next was a gynecologist doctor’s appointment. Yes, an actual doctor who sat eyeball to eyeball with me and had a conversation about life, the economy, the medical profession and the expense of prescriptions here versus Canada. Eyeball to eyeball, I swear. She never glanced away once.
The day closed up with a meeting at Barnes & Noble with my book club and more eyeball to eyeball discussions about life, death, parents, children, finals, traffic, travels and, oh, yeah, the book we had read.
Yesterday was an eyeball-to-eyeball day, and I am grateful for time away from phone calls, the computer and hand-held electronics. Try it. You might be amazed at how much you like it.
