GIANT on Sumneytown Pike to Close This Month

The store, located at 467 Sumneytown Pike, and the GIANT Pharmacy, located on South Main Street in North Wales, will close on Jan. 24.

The GIANT supermarket on Sumneytown Pike in North Wales will close later this month, store officials announced Monday.

The store, located at 467 Sumneytown Pike, and the GIANT Pharmacy, located on South Main Street in North Wales, will close on Jan. 24, the company said in an announcement.

“This was a difficult decision, and it is the result of our ongoing assessment of the operating performance of our stores,” said Tom Lenkevich, company president. “We are always evaluating our store base with the goal to ensure we have the right number of stores to serve our customers in the right locations.”

GIANT said it currently has no plans to close any other stores. All 79 impacted associates will be offered positions in surrounding stores, the company said.

The Sumneytown Pike supermarket is 39 years old with less than 33,000 square-feet of sales area, the company said. Nearby GIANT stores that will remain open include: Knapp Road in Montgomeryville; Bethlehem Pike in Spring House; and Cowpath Road in Hatfield.
