Today I am grateful for Greece. I’ve always wanted to go to Greece. It’s on my bucket list, high priority in my brain, but pretty far down because of the budget. So last Thursday, when his golf date was cancelled because of rain. . .again. . .I came home from the pool and told John we were going to Greece.

By now you know the man looks at me like I have rocks in my head more often than not, but I keep his life interesting and he even admits he has not been bored one minute since we met 37 years ago. That’s something, isn’t it?

“Greece?” he asked. “Did we win the lottery, finally? Do I have to get my passport? Where is my passport? Is my passport even valid?” Slow down, cowboy. We’re not really going to Greece. We’re going to Atlantic City to see the sand sculptures on the Jersey Shore. We’re going to pretend we are in Greece. He looked relieved. Honest.
We often play the game of visiting a local spot on a day-cation and pretending we are someplace exotic. If you get the right mind-set it’s a lot of fun. The heat and humidity at the shore on Thursday made it a perfect “Greece” day. It wasn’t raining at the shore, but it felt wet enough to be rain. The heat on the sand was so penetrating that even I stood in the Cooling Station spray with all of the four-year-olds. We did manage to see all of the sand sculptures and they were amazing. John’s favorite was the Jersey Devil and mine was bridges and balls. I asked one of the artists what they use and he said, “Sand and water. That’s all, until we are all done, then a light mixture of water and glue so it sustains through the wind.” Amazing.
Today I am grateful for Greece and especially the drinks we had overlooking the Aegean Sea, on a beautiful, sultry summer day. Where will we go next?
