Happenstance

Daily Gratitude

Sunday, September 20, 2015

Today I am grateful for happenstance. Before you all go crazy digging through your computers, looking for yesterday’s post, don’t. There wasn’t one. We went from a funeral, to having company, to going to a bonfire to see the son of a friend and his husband. The day disappeared like morning fog in the sunshine. Poof!

Now, back to happenstance. . . yesterday when my son and his wife visited I handed him a large newspaper supplement on the Pope’s pending visit. I know he doesn’t care, but it was a way to zing him because they live in the city and they are up to here with details about street closings and preparations. . .of Armageddon proportions.

I handed him the paper and asked him if he wanted it. “No! I’m all done with this Pope stuff,” he said, or maybe it was something unprintable. Probably. I don’t remember. He threw the paper back on the kitchen table.

Then we got to chatting around the table and I casually flipped through the supplement, barely looking at the pages I was turning, until I stopped at one particular picture. “Hey, Susan, this one looks a little like. . .it’s the view from your wedding. . .hey! This is YOU!” She barely blinked when telling us that she gave the hotel and photographer permission to use her likeness.

My son went crazy! He took a picture of it and plastered it on Facebook immediately, so this is probably a little redundant. Susan called her mom, who found the on-line link. I called a friend to see if she still had her paper from a few days earlier and we went out to collect them.

As they were leaving with their copies, Matt said, “Hey mom! You were in The Inquirer last week and Susan is in The Reporter this week. Isn’t that cool?” Yea. Cool happenstance!
