Today I am grateful for high school musicals. What a bunch of talent we have at our local high schools. These kids work very hard, studying their characters and learning the intricate music of “Titanic- The Musical”. Good for them. We saw it last night and while there were a few microphone, talking-too-fast and pitch problems the majority of the show was fantastic. The casting was dead-on accurate.
The set, costumes and orchestra made it a great production. Where do you go to the theater these days for ten bucks, where you hear a FULL orchestra? North Penn High School, that’s where. I felt elevated from my seat hearing the percussionists go full-out! That alone is worth the price of admission.

One of the things that makes high school productions so much better than in the past
Is the use of microphones and amplification. School don’t have theaters, they have auditoriums, with questionable acoustics. The use of mics erases that issue.

I was impressed with the use of lighting and music to depict key moments in the sinking of the Titanic. The set was used in the most creative and efficient way possible for a production of this magnitude. The costumes were perfect, with the hats nearly making an entrance of their own. Actors stayed in character from the minute they entered through audience doors. That’s rare in a high school production and I noticed it immediately.
Many of the performers stood out. . .some in a great way. . .some not as much, but the one thing no one can quibble with is the performances of the entire ensemble. When they did a number you couldn’t tear your eyes away. Simply spectacular. Good job! Go see it!
