If Big Snowstorm Hits, North Penn Plans 'Traditional Snow Day'

In a year full of strife and discord for school children, a snow day off school is a reminder of joy and normalcy.

LANSDALE, PA — With a powerful winter storm headed into the region this week, there's a possibility Montgomery County could get hit by several inches of snow. If that happens, the North Penn School District will be closed Thursday, they announced Monday afternoon.

The school also announced that they'd moved the scheduled day of synchronous virtual learning from Thursday to Wednesday, to help facilitate this potential off day.

North Penn isn't the only school district considering the importance of allowing students to have a traditional snow day, in a year that has been so chaotic and unnerving to children.

Similar discussions are underway throughout the region. At Cinnaminson High School in South Jersey, Superintendent Stephen Cappello called snow days a "one of the true gifts of childhood."

"Far too many chances for them to play and 'just be a kid' have been taken from them over the last nine months," Cappello said.

A final decision will be announced by Wednesday at 6 p.m., North Penn school officials said.

Four to eight inches of snow is possible in southeastern Pennsylvania, the National Weather Service said, with up to 12 inches in certain areas depending on the trajectory of the storm. See details.
