Today I am grateful for incredible fashions. I love awards shows, but mostly for the dresses. Plus, where else could I see John Travolta in a dog collar? I can be smug and comment on how ridiculous the “other” half look. Why not? You are, too. We should look so ridiculous! Just once. Please!
My favorite dress of the night was the Kelly green on Scarlett Johannson. . .and I liked the “hairy choke collar” part that critics dissed. I thought she looked stunning, shaved head and all. And I loved Reese Witherspoon’s white and black, too. J-Lo’s was too much for me. You could have seen her from outer space and where I’m really okay with cleavage, I thought her plunging neckline just looked tasteless.

The beautiful black girl who won last year, Lupita wore a white pearl number that just looked painful. I wondered if it was like sitting on one of those wooden marble car seats that are supposed to be good for circulation. And Marion Cotillard, also in white looked like a well-designed furnace filter, with circles showing through to the other layer. I’d have stayed away from her in case one section was fiberglass. Critics loved her look. They didn’t ask me. Oprah shouldn’t have had the dress tucked in tight under her butt. It wasn’t necessary and it didn’t flatter from the side or back, but looks fabulous from the front. On the red carpet Chrissy Teigen, who was with John Legend, had a slit that went UP to her neck, exposing more business than decent, even though she kept trying to hold her purse in front of her crotch.
I was not crazy about the set backdrops. They were too glitzy and buzy and just too much for me. The dresses are half the show, so all of the glitz was overdone. They would have done better with simpler backgrounds. I bawled through John Legend & Common’s number. I loved Lady Ga Ga and her tribute to Julie Andrews. . .plus the set for that was beautiful, with simple lighting and string musicians on simple stools throughout. I thought most of the speeches were okay, especially when they go a little nuts with joy, like Eddie Redmayne did, but I can always live without the political pitches or cause-du-jour references.

Going on and on about the rest of the show is pointless because it’s all about the dresses. . .and I am grateful that SOMEONE can wear those incredible fashions.
