Montco Community College Among Nation's Best For Vets: Study

Montgomery County Community College has been named as one of 2017's 'Best for Vets' colleges.

Montgomery County Community College has been named as one of 2017's 'Best for Vets' colleges.

It's part of a ranking issued Tuesday by the independent news publication Military Times. MCCC ranked in the top 25 of all two-year colleges in the country and is the only community college in Pennsylvania to garner a spot on the list.

The ranking results are from Military Times’ comprehensive survey of veteran and military student offerings and rates of academic achievement at more than 500 participating colleges, according to a press release from the school.

The Best for Vets list looks at several factors that help make colleges and universities a good fit for service members, military veterans, and their families.

Some of Montco's amenities include a designated Veterans Resource Center at the Central Campus in Blue Bell which provides student veterans with a place where they can connect with other veterans. Similar services are provided in Pottstown.

“When veterans transition from the military to college, there can be some challenges,” Veterans Resource Coordinator Michael Brown said. “We want to make that transition smoother, by offering opportunities, benefits, education, and connection with other veterans here on campus.”

To further support veterans, the College offers unique programs, such as free yoga and meditation sessions each semester for both student and community veterans, the school said.

Last year, student veterans had the opportunity to attend a Veterans Mindfulness Retreat, led by Psychology faculty members Dr. Anne Marie Donohue and Dr. Deb Greenspan and Michael Brown, to help decrease stress and improve their overall emotional well-being.

In addition to this designation, MCCC previously has been named a “Military Friendly School” six times by Victory Media.
