NPSD Kids Join Girls On The Run

Girls on the Run aims to help young girls boost their life skills and confidence.

From North Penn School District: Nearly 200 female students from six schools in the North Penn School District (NPSD) have been meeting since February as part of the international movement, Girls on the Run, that will culminate in a 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, May 20 at Montgomery County Community College.

Girls on the Run International was established in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina by Molly Barker. What started with 13 girls in one school has grown to over 200 councils in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Girls on the Run is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

In the NPSD, Girls on the Run programs are held at Gwynedd Square, General Nash, Inglewood, Knapp, Montgomery and Walton Farm elementary schools. Each of the teams are coordinated by between eight and 12 parent and staff volunteer coaches. The after-school, volunteer program’s curriculum focuses on girls in grades three through eight. Teams meet twice a week for 90 minutes to practice social, emotional and relational skills. Each session devotes approximately 60 minutes to movement and lessons and the remaining 30 minutes to walking, jogging and running.

The NPSD would like to wish each of the 189 student participants the best of luck at their 5K race and thank the parent and staff volunteer coaches for their efforts and dedication to this meaningful program.
