Old Route 202 To Be Renamed In Montgomery Township

Business owners hope the new designation will bring more customers back to the area.

A portion of old Route 202 in Montgomery Township will be officially renamed Business Route 202, a local business alliance recently announced.

The Chalfont-New Britain Business Alliance said they had been lobbying for the change for over two years.

Alliance president Robert Showalter said that the renaming had to go through a “maze of approvals.”

“Our efforts had the support of all the Townships along old 202 as well as both Montgomery County, Bucks County, and PennDOT,” Showalter said.

The portion of “old” 202 that will be renamed runs from Doylestown to Montgomery Township.

It has six different names in that short stretch, Showalter said.

“This makes it very confusing to the driving public,” he added.

Businesses supported the designation because the newer parkway drew customers away from old 202, the business alliance said in a statement.

Renaming the road as Business Route 202 better identifies the stretch of road - filled with shops and businesses - for what it really is. And, Showalter hopes, it will help bring customers back.

“This shows that even a small business group can make a difference with perseverance and strong support from local, county, state, and federal agencies,” Showalter said. “Our hope now is that we will soon be seeing the signs for Business Route 202 appear.”
