Pennsylvania Turnpike Tolls Increase Sunday

It's part of a longer plan that will raise tolls every year through 2044.

HARRISBURG, PA - Bad news for motorists that frequently use the Pennsylvania Turnpike: 2016 will see a 6 percent raise in tolls.

The increase is mainly to pay back loans that were taken out for roadwork projects between 2007 and 2013, according to NBC Philadelphia.

The increased tolls will go into effect on Sunday, January 3, the turnpike said in a statement.

This will not be the last toll increase, either. Rates are expected to increase anywhere from 3 percent to 6 percent every year through 2044, according to the Times Herald.

E-Z Pass customers, who pay lower tolls, comprise three quarters of turnpike drivers, the turnpike said.

The hike comes just months after it was announced that the Delaware River Bridge toll would be hiked to $6.75 for non E-Z Pass users.
