Philly Man Arrested For Hatfield Homicide By Vehicle: DA

80-year-old Shirley Russell was killed when the suspect allegedly ran a red light at a high rate of speed.

HATFIELD, PA -- A Philadelphia man has been arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle after a fatal crash on Friday morning, the Montgomery County District Attorney said.

Jacquill Maurice Johnson, of Philadelphia, was driving at a high rate of speed northbound on Welsh Road at about 4:52 a.m., the DA said.

As he approached Forty Foot Road, the victim, 80-year-old Shirley Russell, entered the intersection, for which she had the right of way, according to the DA.

Johnson, however, ran the red light and smashed into Russell's car, causing it to flip over.

He then took the registration plate from his back window and fled the scene.

Russell suffered severe blunt impact injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene, the DA said.

About an hour later, Johnson returned to the area and was promptly arrested, according to the DA.

Johnson had a suspended drivers license and no proper tags or insurance.

A preliminary hearing is pending.
