It began in fourth grade, when the pair formed a special bond at school—and it did not go unnoticed.

“Watching Ben and Mary in 4th grade always made me smile,” fourth grade teacher, Tracey Spogli said, according to a report by TODAY. “Ben was always so protective of Mary and genuinely cared for her, and it was evident in his actions and words.”

Moser told his mother when the time came, he hoped to take Mary to prom as his date. But before he could make that pledge come true, Mary moved and started attending a different school in the area, the Patriot-News reported.

That didn’t stop Moser from keeping his word.

The quarterback was lucky enough to bump into Mary at a football game this year. The two rekindled their friendship and ahead of the big dance, Moser gave Mary a bunch of balloons that said “Prom” on them, he told the Patriot News.

She said yes. The two celebrated prom on May 8.

“Ben and Mary had a wonderful time at prom and danced the night away! He said she didn’t sit down most of the night and gave him a run for his money…that’s saying something,” according to Ben’s mother, Lisa.

Meanwhile, the story captured hearts throughout the country. Ben and Mary’s story was reported by the Today Show, Sports Illustrated, BuzzFeed and more.

“I can’t even begin to thank everyone for all the out pouring and love with all these comments!!! Your kindness is overwhelming and loving,” Lisa Moser posted to her Facebook page.
