Today I am grateful for rainbows. Yesterday Anja, John and I were driving home from our other son’s house commenting on the odd sky and weather.
The sun was shining brightly, but in the distance a bank of steel gray clouds rolled in. The contrast of the new growth on the trees, flowering branches, and bright sunshine against the dark clouds was breathtaking. Then it started to rain, with huge plops splattering the windshield like intestinal bombs from overhead birds.

I saw it first. Then John. Then Anja saw one, then two brilliant, clear-as-day rainbows. She waited for an open spot where there were no trees or disgusting sound barriers blocking her view, then snapped the picture with her ever-present phone.

“I have never seen a rainbow before,” she said. “This is my first one.” I’m grateful for rainbows and that I was there to witness them with my almost fifteen-year-old granddaughter.
