Special Bat Release Program To Be Held In Lansdale

Bats are critical cogs in a healthy ecosystem and protect humans from disease carrying mosquitoes.

LANSDALE, PA — A special event exploring and celebrating the world of bats will take place in Lansdale this spring.

The "bat release" program put together by the Lansdale Environmental Advisory Commission will take place on Friday, May 10 just after sunset.

"Learn why bats are vital to the health of our ecosystem, their natural history, species diversity and how to protect our backyard bats," the EAC shared. "Learn how backyard conservation is important for the survival of Pennsylvania bats. Meet some of our education bats and learn how Pennsylvania Bat Rescue is helping to save Pennsylvania bats."

Bats will fly at around 8:30 p.m.

While bats may appear ferocious, it's unlikely you'll ever see their exact countenance, as they are swift fliers and only appear at night. They do have teeth, but they never attack humans. Their flight patterns may veer near people at times while they are in pursuit of mosquitoes.

In a single night of hunting, a bat can consume up to half its body weight in insect snacks, wildlife biologists estimate.

Pre-registration for the event is required and the program is limited to 60 participants. Pre-register here.
