Sumneytown Pike Pedestrian Bridge To Be Relocated To Towamencin Creek

Upper Gwynedd has received a $306,229 state grant to create a walkable connection between North Penn HS, the shopping mall, and Wawa.

UPPER GWYNEDD TOWNSHIP, PA — Upper Gwynedd has received a major state grant that will relocate a pedestrian bridge to make the area more walkable.

The Sumneytown Pike pedestrian bridge, which currently crosses Wissahickon Creek, will be dismantled and moved to Towamencin Creek, where there is currently no pedestrian access.

The $306,229 grant will allow the community to connect North Penn shopping mall, Wawa, North Penn High School, and Corpus Christi School and Church.

“This grant exemplifies our commitment to enhancing pedestrian infrastructure, ensuring that all members of our community can travel locally in a safe manner,” State Rep. Liz Hanbidge said in a statement. “Relocating the pedestrian bridge to an area that receives more foot traffic is a commonsense approach to improving public safety and reducing traffic congestion."

The funding comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Multimodal Transportation Fund.
