Bathroom Fights, Vandalism Prompt Pennsbury Policy
Pennsbury High School students will have limited restroom access and a bathroom sign-in sheet following fights and vandalism, officials said

FALLSINGTON, PA —Following a fight that led to police being called to Pennsbury High School West last week and a wave of bathroom vandalism, the Pennsbury School District is instituting policies to curb the incidents.
Schools Superintendent Thomas A. Smith sent two letters last week to parents and guardians, first informing them about the fight and then a follow-up three days later about "an increase in fights and vandalism in our bathrooms."
The district has also instituted policies that call for increased visibility among administration around bathrooms, limited restroom access for students and bathroom sign-in procedures.

On March 13, Smith notified parents and guardians about a "physical altercation after B period" at Pennsbury High School West in which police were called as a precautionary measure after the fight was broken up.
Smith said the students involved were dealt with administratively and through the police.

"Providing safe and secure schools for our students and staff is a priority," said the superintendent on behalf of the school administration. "Unfortunately, these behaviors disrupt the educational environment and we ask for your support as we work to support our students and staff members."
Smith asked parents and guardians to speak to their children and contact a counselor or administrator if support is needed.
Last Thursday, Smith reached out again in another letter.
"We are facing concerning behaviors by some of our high school students. Specifically, we are seeing an increase in fights and vandalism in our bathrooms," the superintendent said. "These behaviors are disturbing and negatively impacting the climate of our school for students and staff. Just as concerning is the number of students who are watching and recording these behaviors rather than alerting a staff member."
Effective immediately, the administrative team will be taking additional steps to ensure the safety of all students.
The steps included more visibility in the vicinity of the bathrooms by the administration and increased communication about behavior expectations.
School officials also imposed limited restroom access and bathroom sign-in procedures.
"It is important to remember that the vast majority of our students work hard to create a positive climate, and we have a number of programs to support students who are struggling," the letter said. "It simply isn’t fair for our students and staff members, and we acknowledge it will be an inconvenience for some."
The letter continues that the policies are the "best course of action."
The administration asked for assistance to reinforce the importance of adhering to the high school's expected behaviors.
The letter was signed by Smith, High School Principal Reggie Meadows, and Assistant Principals Patricia Steckroat, and Ryan Staub.
