Fake Social Media Posts Prompt Warning In Bristol Twp.

BRISTOL TOWNSHIP, PA —The Bristol Township Police Department is alerting residents about fake social media posts about crimes or other safety issues in the township.

"We have been receiving an uptick in fake social media posts about our area," police said. "If you see a post like these, please do not engage. When our department identifies a fake news post being created, we will address the public on its validity."

Sgt. Jason Mancuso said that one social media post circulating involved a missing boy between the ages of 2 and 3 who was found in Croydon. The post stated that the child was safe and in the police station.

The poster —identified as Deborah M. Harbison on the Croydon, Bucks County, Facebook page —said that no one called looking for the boy nor did police know where he lived. Three pictures were posted as well.

"The attachment is fake," Mancuso said. "It is spreading through our local area and seems to be a trend that is growing lately. We had a robbery post (that was also fake ) gain traction last week."

LT. C.J. Winick advised residents to beware of fake stories and potential scams that may result.
