Family Raising Money After Therapy Dog Injured In Hit And Run

The service dog was trying to get to his 8-year-old companion when he was struck by a car.

A local family has launched an online fundraiser after their dog, which acts as an unofficial therapy animal for their son with anxiety disorder, was seriously injured in a hit and run.

According to information from CARES in Langhorne, which treated the black lab puppy named Marshall, the driver who struck the animal drove off. Marshall was left with a broken leg, two broken hips, a ruptured spleen and liver, and experienced bleeding in his abdomen and multiple abrasions.

According to CARES, an emergency veterinary service, Marshall was trying to get to his 8-year-old companion Jimmy at the time of the accident. The puppy acts as an unofficial therapy dog to help Jimmy deal with an anxiety disorder. Jimmy was outside working with his therapist at the time of the accident.

"I don't even know how he survived," said owner Rachel McCreesh of Southampton.

Marshall has undergone three surgeries and is expected to be hospitalized through mid-week. The cost for Marshall's care is estimated to exceed $14,000, according to information from CARES.

Any donations from the online fundraiser that exceed the cost of Marshall's care will be given to the CARES non-profit Pawsitively Caring. That fund helps families with a critical financial need in providing lifesaving veterinary care for their pets.
