Fugitive Charged In Fatal Woodbourne Rd Crash Held On $5M Bail

Nearly 7 years after Sheree Maillie was killed in a crash on Woodbourne Road, the man charged in her death has returned to face charges.

MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — Nearly seven years after Sheree Maillie was killed in a car crash on Woodbourne Road, the Peruvian man who authorities say was responsible for her death has returned to Bucks County to face charges.

Nelio Sotomayor, 46, an international fugitive who had been sought since 2011 for prosecution in the death of the 55-year-old Newtown Township woman, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of homicide by vehicle and other offenses related to the Dec. 23, 2010 death of Maillie.

He has been held at Bucks County prison on $5 million bail.

Authorities allege that Sotomayor was driving without a valid license when his vehicle attempted to illegally pass on a double yellow line. He struck the victim’s vehicle head-on, killing her.

A day after the charges were filed, Sotomayor flew from Florida to Colombia, and then to Peru. He was arrested in Peru in January 2017, and extradition proceedings have been ongoing since then.

Maillie was a much-loved teacher's aide at Newtown Middle School and a mother of two. In an interview with Newtown Patch in April 2011, Maillie's family expressed frustration that Sotomayor was able to leave the country before being charged.

"At this point I hope justice is served," widower Mike Maillie said in an email to Patch Tuesday.
