Heritage Conservancy to Host “Earth Day in May” at Croydon Woods

This environmental fair is free and open to the community. Giveaways, guided tours, and an educational award presentation will take place.

Heritage Conservancy, a Doylestown-based not-for-profit land conservation and historic preservation organization, is hosting Earth Day in May at its Croydon Woods Nature Preserve in Croydon, PA, on Saturday, May 4th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Get a guided tour of the preserve, meet with local environmental organizations, and find out what you can do to make a difference in your community. This free community fair will have activities for guests of all ages to enjoy along the trail. A ribbon cutting and ceremony for a recently installed outdoor classroom will also take place during Earth Day in May.

Croydon Woods Nature Preserve is an 80-acre forested property in Bristol Township, and it is one of the last remaining wooded wetland forests in the region. It provides publicly accessible green space in a more developed area of Bucks County. By connecting the community with this important natural resource and all that it has to offer, the Conservancy hopes to promote environmental activism and working together in the care of this community asset. The Conservancy will offer guided hikes on the property, EnviroScape demonstrations, and a nature explorer activity for kids.

A dynamic group of organizations will join Heritage Conservancy at Earth Day in May. Senator Tommy Tomlinson, Silver Lake Nature Center, G.O.A.L., Melmos Dog Treats, Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library, Bristol Township EAC, and the Michener Art Museum, to name a few, will provide games, giveaways, and children’s activities as well.

At 11:00 AM, Heritage Conservancy will celebrate the official ribbon cutting on its Croydon Woods Outdoor Classroom, which was installed with support from David Haas. This learning space features boulder seating that will provide kids with a front row seat to the wonders of nature! Teachers at Keystone Elementary School, which is located right next to Croydon Woods, will now be able to take their lessons outdoors, where students will learn through observation and exploration and discover various forms of life that exist in their own backyard.

One teacher at the school has already shown her commitment to environmental education by going above and beyond in working with Heritage Conservancy on its programs. After the ribbon cutting, Kati Bryson, a fourth grade teacher at Keystone Elementary School, will be awarded with Heritage Conservancy’s Environmental Champion Teacher of the Year Award for her exemplary work and dedication to providing diverse and exciting opportunities to connect students with nature. To wrap up the ceremony, a few of Kati’s students will give speeches about what the outdoor classroom and nature mean to them.

“Nature and all the great things it has to offer are for each and every person to experience. We want everyone to feel welcome to enjoy this beautiful forest at Croydon Woods Nature Preserve,” said Shannon Fredebaugh-Siller, Heritage Conservancy’s Community Engagement Programs Manager, in preparation of Earth Day in May. “We hope this community event will bring the neighbors out to learn about the animals that call the forest home and the important steps we are taking at Heritage Conservancy to protect this property for the public to benefit.”

It is Heritage Conservancy’s hope that this event will provide a place for community members to have fun and get out in nature while also learning about environmental and community issues, resources, and actions they can take to get involved. It is sure to be a great time, with attendees enjoying and celebrating the natural beauty of this wonderful area.

Earth Day in May in sponsored by Fulton Bank. Extended support for Heritage Conservancy's "Learning Beyond the Classroom" initiatives came from Matrix Building Group and the William Penn Foundation.
