Kia, Hyundai Thefts Reported In Falls Township
Falls Township Police said there was a rash of vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles overnight at several apartment complexes.
FALLS TOWNSHIP, PA —Falls Township Police are warning residents to protect their Kia and Hyundai vehicles from thefts.
The Falls Township Police Department said Wednesday that it experienced a rash of vehicle theft and thefts from vehicles targeting automobiles manufactured by Kia and Hyundai, which is part of a social media trend educating and encouraging the theft of these vehicles.
While no location is immune to attempted theft, the recent instances occurred in the parking lots of apartment complexes situated along West Trenton Avenue, police said.

According to Business Insider, the original video posted on TikTok showed how to start the unprotected models using a USB charger, leading to the increase in thefts. Those who post videos of themselves stealing the vehicles, use the hashtag “Kia Boys," a prior Patch story reported.
Many of the Kia models manufactured from 2011-2021 and Hyundais made from 2015-2021 lack the electronic immobilizers that tell the car something other than a key has been inserted in the ignition in an attempt to turn over the engine. Immobilizers are standard equipment on most other vehicles made during that time.

Police ask residents to promptly report any suspicious vehicles, persons, and activity.
Falls Township Police are offering residents tips for preventing auto theft and keeping their vehicles safe:
- Lock your doors.
- Do not leave a spare key near your vehicle.
- Close the windows.
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Install an audible alarm system and anti-theft device.
- Install a vehicle immobilizer system.
- Install a tracking system.
- Don't leave valuables in your car.
