Langhorne Man Charged With DUI After Crash Injures Child

A Langhorne man has been charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI in connection a Newtown crash that injured a child.

NEWTOWN, PA — A 35-year-old Langhorne man has been charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI in connection with a one-car crash last month in Newtown that seriously injured his 12-year-old passenger.

Thomas Philippi was charged Wednesday with aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI and aggravated assault by vehicle — both felonies. He was also charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, recklessly endangering another person, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, prohibiting text based communications and reckless driving.

The crash occurred on Swamp Road in the area of the Covered Bridge Trail on Jan. 27 shortly after 5:15 p.m. It required the response of Temple MedFlight, as well as local police, fire, and ambulance squads.

According to Newtown Township Police, the juvenile passenger was flown to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her current condition or identity has not been released. Her relation to the accused was also not released.

Philippi was arraigned Wednesday and was sent to the Bucks County Prison after he was unable to post bail, which was set at 10 percent of $100,000. He later posted bail and was released.

His preliminary hearing is set for March 4.
