Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad Former Chief Dies

A viewing will be held for Hugh Cooperman, who died Monday after serving 40 years with the Levittown squad.

LEVITTOWN, PA —The Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad has announced the death of its former chief.

The squad said in a Facebook post that Hugh Cooperman, who served at least three years as chief, died on Monday.

"It is with tremendous sadness and sorrow that we mourn the loss of one of our own," the squad said in a post approved for release by Cooperman's family.

Cooperman served as "an extremely dedicated and active member" of the organization for 40 years in various positions, including squad chief six years ago.

"He was a life member that was a mentor and well-respected by so many within the community," the squad said. "We ask that you keep Hugh’s family as well as our EMS family in your thoughts."

No cause of death was given for Cooperman.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dougherty Funeral Home, 2200 Trenton Rd. in Levittown.

Any Emergency Services personnel wishing to be a part of the procession at the conclusion of the viewing should contact Chief 168.

Area fire companies offered its condolences in Facebook posts on Wednesday.

"Our deepest sympathies to the Cooperman family and Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad. Those who knew Hugh, know this is a tremendous loss," the Trevose Fire Company said.

"LFC2 extends its condolences to the Cooperman family and PEMS for the loss of Past Chief and longtime member Hugh Cooperman. May you rest in peace Chief," the Levittown Fire Company No. 2 said.
