St. Mary Adds New Prostate Treatment
The Rezum system is a minimally invasive steam-therapy option for patients.

LANGHORNE, PA — St. Mary Medical Center is now offering a new treatment for patients with enlarged prostate.
The Rezum system is a minimally invasive steam-therapy option for patients, according to the St. Mary Comprehensive Urologic Specialists. According to a news release, the treatment does not require general anesthesia and provides an effective alternative to a lifetime of taking medications.
At St. Mary, Dr. Jamison S. Jaffe, Dr. Justin D. Harmon and Dr. Michael W. Bickell are urologists offering Rezum as an in-office treatment. The treatment preserves sexual function and offers a rapid return to normal activities, the release said.

Enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is one of the top 10 most common and costly conditions, according to St. Mary, affecting 14 million American men age 50 and older. There are nearly 1 million new diagnoses each year.
BPH causes significant quality of life issues, including lack of sleep, anxiety, challenges with sexual function and limits to daily activity.

Rezum uses natural water vapor, or steam, to treat enlarged and obstructive prostate tissue that causes symptoms such as frequent, urgent and irregular urine flow, weak urine stream, straining and getting up at night to urinate.
The water vapor is delivered into the targeted prostate tissue and condenses, causing the tissue to expire. In the weeks that follow a treatment, the body's natural healing response eliminates the treated tissue, shrinking the prostate, according to the release.
As the extra tissue is removed, the urethra opens back up, reducing symptoms and improving the patient's quality of life.
"At St. Mary Comprehensive Urologic Specialists, we are dedicated to bringing our patients new treatment options that can greatly improve quality of life," said Jaffe. "With this steam-based treatment, we have a minimally invasive, lasting, and cost-effective alternative for treating enlarged prostate
