A closeout grocery outlet is one that looks for opportunities to purchase products at prices well below the normal wholesale costs and pass those saving on to our customers. We buy local produce from Amish and Mennonite farmers in Lancaster County. Other fresh products are brought in by the manufacturers. We buy Close-outs from different businesses that represent recognized name brand companies and handle their overstocks and close dated product. Overstocked products happen when manufacturers change the label or size of an item. Sometimes their sales on an item were less than expected and they need to move their remaining inventory. Sometimes the manufacturer places a movie promotion or a coupon on an item that is going to expire or the movie will no longer show in theaters. Large retail chains often put in orders and then cancel them leaving the manufacturer with excess inventory. We do not visit local stores and buy product they can’t sell. We do buy some products that are rejected from other stores. For example, when Wal-Mart gets a shipment of Hefty trash bags and some of the boxes are damaged or not sealed., they reject them and get credit from the manufacturer. Hefty doesn’t want to go through all of the product so they sell it “as is” to a company that sorts, cleans and inventories what they receive and resells it to us. There are also opportunities with seasonal items, seasonal packaging or packaging changes such as downsizing a product to maintain the same retail value, trial items that were tested in other regions, slight damages that occur in warehouses. A recent example is orange juice with the wrong date printed on the package. It showed that the product would be out dated a month earlier than it should. There were 8 trailer loads of this product produced with the incorrect date. Of course our customers love this.
We feature items you would normally find in a regular retail market. We just don’t have access to every item at discounted prices all the time. Hence our product line is constantly changing. We also feature one of the largest bulk food line of products anywhere in the region. These are not always discounted as much as our other products are but they offer unique hard to find items such as gluten free baking ingredients. The main thing that differentiates us from other grocery stores is the price. Secondly would be the unique items that often become available. We have had new products that have not been introduced in this area via the regular retail stores and we have had it at prices well below regular retail. This has allowed our customers to try something new without having to pay the full retail price before their friends have even had a chance to try it.
