Inmate, 31, Dies At Graterford Prison

Breaking: Authorities announced on Friday that a 31-year-old inmate has died at Graterford Prison.

GRATERFORD STATE PRISON, PA — Authorities announced on Friday that a 31-year-old inmate has died at Graterford Prison. It's the second inmate death reported at Graterford in the last few weeks.

Christopher Gilchrist was found unresponsive in his cell at around 9:06 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, the Department of Corrections said.

He was rushed to Einstein Medical Center Montgomery, where he was later pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m.

His cause of death is not yet clear.

Gilchrist had been serving a five to 15 year sentence for aggravated assault with bodily injury to an officer, which was committed in Chester County.

Just recently in January, a 68-year-old inmate was found dead in his Graterford cell. Arthur Phillips had been serving a 10-to-20 year sentence for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a person under 16.

Pennsylvania State Police will conduct an investigation into Gilchrist's death, as they do with all inmate deaths.
