Montco Heroin Dealer Sentenced to Prison After Huge Drug Cache Seized

When the Montco dealer was arrested, he had $13,000 worth of heroin, $6,000 in cash, a taser and five cell phones on his person.

A convicted heroin dealer has been sentenced to eight and a half to 20 years in prison after being busted with a massive amount of heroin, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday. Dashawn Smith of Pottstown had been convicted on numerous charges, firearms counts, two counts of possession with intent to deliver, resisting arrest and related counts.

“This sentence of up to 20 years is another example of the seriousness of dealing heroin,” DA Kevin Steele said. “Drug traffickers need to be aware that the law enforcement community in Montgomery County is working to shut down the pipeline of heroin. If you are dealing, know that we are out there looking for you and when we find you, you are going to be prosecuted and you will be facing serious time in State Prison.”

Smith was originally arrested on Dec. 18, 2015, authorities said. At that time, he had 1,291 bags of heroin on him, which had a total street value of $13,000. He also had $6,000 in cash, a taser and five cell phones.

Smith was also being sentenced for a separate June 2013 arrest, during which he was caught carrying an additional 900 bags of heroin and a .45-caliber gun, the DA said.

During legal proceedings, Pottstown Detective Sgt. Michael Markovich testified that at each of the defendant’s arrests were the largest seizures of bagged heroin that he had ever seen, the DA said.
