“I’m proud of these 16 students! To be recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program is a great honor and demonstrates that they are dedicated to academic excellence,” said Spring-Ford Area Senior High School Principal Patrick Nugent. “I’m also proud of our staff as they have played a role in their academic accomplishments.”
Of the 1.5 million entrants, only 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualified for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Of those 50,000 highest scores, about 16,000 students are notified that they have qualified as National Merit and National Achievement Semifinalists, while 34,000 qualify as Commended Students. Although Commended Students do not continue in the 2015 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, they are recognized as being among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition nationally.
To ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state. The National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding African American high school students. African American students may enter both the National Achievement Program and the National Merit Program.
To be considered for a scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other. Semifinalists will be notified in February 2015 if they have advanced to the Finalist phase.
Since its founding, NMSC has recognized 3 million students and provided approximately 387,000 scholarships worth over $1.5 billion. For more information about the National Merit Scholarship program, please visit www.nationalmerit.org.
