Glencairn Museum

This guided tour focuses particularly on the religious uses of decorative objects worn by people in a variety of cultures including ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome; the Middle Ages; and jewelry worn by family members who once called Glencairn home. Attendees will be invited to reflect on their own personal adornments and any special meanings they may hold.

This 90-minute guided tour presents the history of Glencairn Museum, from its origin as a family home to its transformation into a museum dedicated to religious art. It is sure to awaken your curiosity and foster a spirit of discovery. 
The guided tour begins in the Great Hall, featuring awe-inspiring architecture and skilled craftsmanship. Experience spiritual beliefs and practices through the ages by exploring three galleries with art and artifacts from the Glencairn Museum collection. Immerse yourself in family spaces that have remained unchanged since Glencairn was a home, including the family Chapel and the Main Bedroom and Bath. The elevator ascent to the Tower, with its commanding view of the local area and the Philadelphia skyline, is a visitor favorite. Have your camera ready!

Around every corner in Glencairn, visitors encounter stunning examples of early 20th-century craftsmanship—in metal, stained glass, mosaic, stone, and wood. Craftsmanship at Glencairn: Five Artists is a guided tour and exhibit that explores the work of five artists who worked at Glencairn, the castle-like home built by Raymond Pitcairn for his family (completed in 1939). Well over one hundred artists, architects, and laborers contributed to its construction and decoration, which took more than a decade to complete. Without the efforts of all of them working together, the Pitcairn’s remarkable home could not have become a reality. 
Pitcairn had previously established a variety of workshops adjacent to the building site of Bryn Athyn Cathedral (dedicated 1919), including an architectural studio, a modeling shop, a metal shop, a stained-glass studio and glassworks, a stone shop, and a wood shop. These same shops—and many of the same artists—were also used to create artwork for Glencairn. This guided tour, which will explore the Great Hall and Upper Hall on the first floor, the main bedroom on the third floor, the Chapel on the fifth floor, and the observation deck at the top of the tower, will introduce visitors to works by Parke E. Edwards (metalwork), Winfred S. Hyatt (stained glass), Robert G. Glenn (mosaic), Benjamin A. Tweedale (stone carving), and Frank Jeck (woodcarving).

PHILA, PA, July 8, 2026 – An award-winning book publisher announced a true “Philly Girl” search, inviting locals to nominate themselves or others. The search is for 2 winners who meet the following qualifications:
1)The Philly Girl must have been born or raised in the Philly area (suburbs around the city included).
2)The Philly Girl must have done something positive to change the world. She would be described as a trailblazer, a voice for justice, philanthropic, or an advocate.
The publisher of the new book, Philly Girl: Top 40 Women Who Have Changed the World, is searching for 2 more women to join the 38 already chosen. “We’re looking for the women who are well-known in their communities but may not be well-known to the world. Nominations can also include deceased women who made an incredible contribution that should be included in the book,” explained the publisher.
The women recognized in the book have varied professions in the fields of Entertainment, Justice, Healthcare, Philanthropy and Sports. Some were Trailblazers and others depict women’s role in History.

Learn about the ritual of mummification in ancient Egypt, travel to ancient Rome to meet gods and goddesses, uncover temple gifts in ancient Greece, and investigate the protective art of ancient Mesopotamian palaces!
Explore each culture through a different hands-on project, including cuneiform clay tablets, protective amulets, and symbolic jewelry.
This program is recommended for students ages 7–12 but is open to the whole family. This is not a drop-off event. One adult per group is required to attend. 
Adults, seniors, and students are $8 each; children 4 and under are free.
