Huntingdon Valley CC Member Andrew Mason Shoots 2-Over Par in U.S Amateur Opening Round
The Temple University student is in Wisconsin participating in the U.S. Amateur golf tournament. His opening round score of 72 has him in the hunt to make the cut past Tuesday's second round.

As a finance and real estate double-major at Temple University, Andrew Mason knows all about risk-reward situations.
And now he’s transferring that over to his golf game.
In the first round of the U.S. Amateur at Blue Mound Country Club in Wauwatosa, WI, Mason shot a 72, finishing two shots over par and keeping him in the hunt to advance past the cut on Tuesday. The U.S. Amateur continues Tuesday with a second round of stroke play, after which the field of 312 will be cut to 64 for head-to-head match play competition through Sunday.

“I’ve just been playing a lot more conservatively and a lot smarter,” Mason said. “I haven’t been taking as many risks and letting the round come to me, not forcing anything.”
Mason was three shots over par after the front nine, but rallied with birdies on the par-4 15th and 16th holes. Mason bogeyed the par-3 17th hole to fall back to two shots over par.

“I didn’t putt too well today on the front nine. The pins were all tucked behind the edges and over ridges so I got a little frustrated,” Mason said. “The back nine, I shot one-under so I made one good putt and the rest was pretty steady.”
Part of the reason Mason chose Temple University was because it was closer to his home in Philadelphia. When he graduates after next semester, he plans to stay in the area and look for a job in insurance or real estate.
Right now, he’s content to put the job search on hold and ready to take on the golf course at Erin Hills on Tuesday.
“Just play middle of the greens and make sure that I keep the ball out of the fescue,” Mason said.
