Lions Shut Out by Pennington

The Lions were on the road last Saturday in a non-league affair against Pennington Prep. Coming off a convincing win the week prior, the Lions were confident heading into the game. While the defense turned in an outstanding effort for the Lions, the offense was just not there in an 18-0 defeat.

Four turnovers caused the Lions to lose this game. Three fumbles gave the Raiders the ball inside the Lion’s own 20-yard line, and an interception gave Pennington the ball own the Lions' 23-yard line. Committing that many turnovers alone makes it hard to win a football game, but when all of them come inside the 25 yard line, it makes it near impossible to win.

The Lions only managed to gain 56 total yards on the day. Just last week senior Running back Max Sandberg beat that total on one 80-yard touchdown run.

On the bright side, the Lions defense was looking notable causing three interceptions coming from Glenn Mahon, Oscar Zhang, and Joseph Leventhal. Also, the Lion’s only allowed 167 total yards during the game which translated in an overall good defensive game.

The Lions can do nothing but shake it off and go after the next one on Saturday against neighboring rival Academy of the New Church (ANC). This game means a great amount to the team because most of the kids from both sides know each other, are friendly, and have played other sports with each other.

Senior Oscar Zhang had to say this about the upcoming matchup vs. ANC

“Well, I believe this is a huge game. Everyone knows it. We are backdoor neighbors, rivals and everything in between. The score last year was 27-13 at their place. Now it's time for us to return the favor.”
