Lower Providence Is Now One Of USA's First Flex Plastic Recyclers

Pottstown was America's first municipality to launch this unique recycling program. Now, Lower Providence is on board.

LOWER PROVIDENCE, PA — Back in September, Pottstown became the first municipality in the United States to launch a flexible plastic recycling program, meaning that all sorts of plastic bags, wraps, and packaging could be recycled. Now, Lower Providence Township has joined their Montgomery County compatriot in launching a unique program of their own.

The new program will allow residents to recycle all plastic packaging — which also includes wraps, pouches, various product packaging, potato chip bags, and more.

Typically, these types of plastics comprise a significant and growing portion of waste that goes to landfills. Now, they'll be used to produce a new end recycled product called "rFlex."

Lower Providence and Pottstown call it a "pilot program" that will hopefully demonstrate the viability of processing these types of plastics and turning them into a usable end product.

The innovative program is the brainchild of J.P. Mascaro and Sons and Materials for the Future, an industry-sponsored research collaborative.

Lower Providence residents will be receiving a newsletter that explains the program, and lists items that can now be included in your recycling. There is also a display outlining the program at the Lower Providence Public Library.
