Aggressive Driving Crackdown Underway In Lower Southampton

Police are cracking down on aggressive drivers around the region, including in Lower Southampton.

An aggressive driving enforcement campaign began locally on Aug. 1 and will run through Aug. 26, coinciding with a statewide effort, according to PennDOT. Officers from Lower Southampton Township are participating, as well as many others from Bucks County (see list below).

More than 60 police departments around Pennsylvania, along with the Pennsylvania State Police, will join in the crackdown. Police will be on the lookout for behaviors like running red lights, failing to stop at stop signs, and speeding, officials said.

There were 1,840 crashes and 31 fatalities in the five county, greater Philadelphia area in 2017 in which aggressive driving was a factor.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Buckle Up PA,and AAA Mid-Atlantic are joining state and local police in assisting on the campaign.

If you encounter an aggressive driver, PennDOT offers these tips:

• Get out of their way and don't challenge them;
• Stay relaxed, avoid eye contact and ignore rude gestures;
• Don't block the passing lane if you are driving slower than most of the traffic.
