Happy Labor Day

Parenting: "It's not just a responsibility, it's a way of life"

Happy Labor Day!

That makes me chuckle. My sister had ‘Happy Labor Day’ written on my baby shower cake. I didn’t get it at the time because I was caught in the whirlwind of baby shower activities. She was pleased that I did get it by the end of the day and now, I REALLY get it. But in retrospect, I would rewrite it as ‘Happy Labor Decade!' And that is laugh out loud worthy. It has been an eventful 10 years. That equals an action packed 3,650 labor days!

What did I know about raising a mini human? And what a job it has been. Good and bad… Ups and downs… In sickness and in health... For better or for worse… I should have had to recite some vows prior to each birth.

They could be, “With this delivery, I promise to give you food and drink for energy. A foundation in faith and schooling for education. Toys and games for entertainment. All of my energy for family fun and then still enough for cleaning up after you. I promise to wake in the middle of the night when you call my name because of a scary dream. I will be an impartial voice when you rant and rave about not getting your way. I promise to try and remain calm when you spill red juice on the carpet. I will turn a blind eye when you cheat at candy land because you are in need of self assurance. Through the years, I will continue to hang your art work on the over crowded refrigerator. Exhaust my spare time and volunteer for youth activities to be closer to you. Laugh at all the funny dances and jokes you make. Smile and happily watch you from a distance playing with your dolls or reading a book because you make my heart sing. I will make every effort to do this parenting thing to the best of my ability even though I have no idea what to expect. With this extensive labor, I will be here for you regardless of the situation and love you no matter what.”

These are my vows. Happy Labor Decades to all the parental figures out there! You are working for a good cause.
