Ferderbar Student Wins State Wrestling Championship

Shane Hanson-Ashworth won first place in his division at the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championships.

The weekend of March 24, Feasterville resident Shane Hanson-Ashworth traveled to Hershey, PA with the support of his family for not just a wrestling match, but for the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championships.

The 11-year-old fifth grader didn't just wrestle in the championships. And he didn't just place in his division. Shane won the state championship in the 65-pound 11-12 year old division.

"He was just he was excited," his mother Kimberly Ashworth said.

"He jumped up and down, but after the ref raised his hand, he just cried," she said.

Though Shane is only 11 years old, he has been wrestling since he was 5. According to Ashworth, his older brothers both wrestled and Shane was thrown into the mix as well.

"He doesn’t know any different not to be there," she said.

Shane wrestles for the Malvern Prep Youth Program, but he also practices with Bucks County Storm for additional practice, his mother said.

"He’s only 11, but he works really, really hard to prepare himself to get to that level," Ashworth said of Shane.

In order to earn a spot in the state championships, Shane had to qualify in sectionals and finals, which Ashworth said he has been able to do five times.

He was also able to place in his division four of the five times he made it to the championships, but this was the first time he won his division.

Shane is planning to attend Malvern Preparatory School next year.
