Free Lecture to Feature Historic Postcards of the Delaware Canal and Nearby Sites

The Friends of Washington Crossing Park and the Friends of the Delaware Canal will co-host a free lecture

The Friends of Washington Crossing Park and the Friends of the Delaware Canal will co-host a free lecture – “Unique and Rare Postcards of the Delaware Canal and Nearby Sites” – on Tuesday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Washington Crossing Historic Park (PA) visitor center auditorium.

The lecture will feature numerous images of the Delaware Canal, Washington Crossing and area inns and stores from postcards that date back to the early 20th century – the “Golden Age” of postcards. At the time, the Delaware Canal was a popular subject for postcard photographers. There were still mule-drawn boats plying the canal at the time, but business had slowed down considerably. Photographers took the opportunity to capture a part of American life that would soon be gone. After the close of business in 1931, the beauty of the canal allowed it to remain as a popular subject for postcards.

The lecture will be narrated by Steven Cohen, an active postcard collector and member of the Washington Crossing Card Collectors Club, and Susan Taylor, executive director of the Friends of the Delaware Canal. All of the cards come from Cohen’s personal collection. During the presentation, he will share his knowledge about his cards and the joys and tribulations of collecting them.
