Individuals are going into major retailers and bringing in what appear to be legitimate Visa, Apple, and other gift cards, police said.
They place these gift cards on the rack along with the other legitimate cards. Once a customer pays for and activates the gift card, the scammers get a notification and immediately spend the money that was on the gift card. This leaves the customer/victim with a gift card with no money left on it, police said.
Police recommend buying gift cards from online retailers or from local stores with gift card racks that are not accessible to the public.
