Pennsylvania Eliminating Vehicle Registration Stickers In 2017

The move is expected to save millions for taxpayers, PennDOT said.

As of Dec. 31, 2016, Pennsylvania drivers will not longer need to deal with registration stickers when renewing vehicle registrations, according to PennDOT.

The department of transportation said getting rid of the stickers is expected to save taxpayers $1.1 million a year and will also save an additional $2 million in mailing costs.

The move is part of Act 89, which opened up the possibility of eliminating the stickers, and comes at the heels of a Penn State study that said ditching the stickers would not affect driver compliance with vehicle registration.

PennDOT said authorities will be able to enforce registration laws by having electronic access to PennDOT's database from patrol vehicles. This will let law enforcement determine whether or not a vehicle has a valid registration.

Vehicles with valid registration stickers are not required to remove the stickers, PennDOT said.
