Police Checking Child Seats In Lower Southampton

The checks, happening the next few weeks at schools and daycare centers, also will be making sure older children are wearing seat belts.

LOWER SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Police in Lower Southampton Township have announced they'll be conducting child-restraint enforcement checks during the next few weeks.

The checks will be happening at the township's schools and daycare centers. According to the law, all children from birth to age 4 must be secured in an approved car seat somewhere in the vehicle. (Having them in the front seat is not illegal, but it is not recommended.)

Children younger than 2 years old must be secured in a rear-facing car seat unless the child outgrows the maximum height and weight limits of the seat. People who violate this law are subject to a fine of $75 plus court costs, an EMS surcharge and administrative fees, police say.
