Corbett A Fan of Lyft, Uber

The governor reportedly supports the ride-sharing companies, and would like to see them expand in the Keystone State.

Gov. Tom Corbett has expressed his support for ride-sharing companies such as Lyft and Uber, and says he would like to see them expand services in Pennsylvania.

Lyft and Uber are companies that link private drivers and people seeking rides using mobile-phone apps.

Both companies currently are operating in Allegheny County, but the governor would like to see them expand, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says.

Corbett last week sent letters to Rep. Robert Godshall, R-Montgomery, chairman of the House Consumer Affairs committee, and Sen. Robert Tomlinson, R-Bucks, chairman of the Senate consumer protection and professional licensure committee, asking them to support pending legislation that would create rules for such ride-sharing companies, The Post-Gazette said.

“The evolution of technology and modern transportation systems can, at times, outpace the existing statutory framework which governs their operation in communities across the Commonwealth,” Corbett wrote, according to The Post-Gazette.

Bills that would create oversight and regulation categories for ride-sharing companies have been proposed in the state Senate, by Sen. Wayne Fontana (D-Brookline), and in the House, by Rep. Mark Mustio, (R-Moon) and Rep. Thomas Killion (R-Delaware and Chester), The Post-Gazette said.

Both bill are expected to be considered with the legislative season begins Sept. 15.
