Malvern Prep's Somers Will Row for Penn

The team captain helped Prep place first at Philadelphia City Championships and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.

Malvern Prep senior Alec Somers will head into the city next year to row for the University of Pennsylvania. From the Prep communications office:

Alec Somers, a senior member of the Malvern Prep crew team, has been accepted and will row for the University of Pennsylvania men's heavyweight rowing team.

A three-year varsity rower and captain for Coach Craig Hoffman, Somers’ accomplishments include winning the gold for Malvern Prep at the Philadelphia City Championships and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, and finishing second at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championships.

“Alec has been a hard worker and a great teammate at Malvern, and I am confident that he will continue to excel at the next level,” said Hoffman, who joined Somers and his mother, Deirdre Devine-Somers, at the announcement.

A Malvern resident, Somers has been active in the school’s Stock Market Club.
